Palmerston is 54km north of Dunedin. It is located at the road junction of State Highway 1 linking Dunedin and Waikouaiti to the south with Oamaru and Christchurch to the north.
State Highway 85, known as 'The Pigroot', heads inland to become the principal highway of the Maniototo. The 'Pigroot' is an alternative route to Central Otago.
